The Perfect First Date: Presented By Dating App Coffee Meets Bagel

By Megan (Weyrauch) Johnson on September 26, 2016

Here’s an understatement for you: first dates are hard. Dating advice abounds on the internet, persuading people to meet up for drinks for their first date.

Dating app Coffee Meets Bagel surveyed more than 1,000 couples who met through the app to uncover what made their first date successful. Coffee Meets Bagel, the dating app for millennials looking for true relationships, then surveyed hundreds of single college students to find out their thoughts about their first dates and to expose first date myths.

Here were some of the findings from the August 2016 survey, as listed in a recent press release.

1. Thirty-seven percent of couples said they talked for more than one week before going on a first date versus 23 percent of single college students who said they talk that long before meeting.

2. Couples scheduled their first date on all days of the week rather than just on the weekends, while single college students preferred to schedule first dates on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

3. More of the app couples went out for dinner on their first date (33 percent) than any other activity such as going out for drinks or coffee. Only about 15 percent of college singles said dinner was their first date choice, while most thought going out for coffee (27 percent) was the better choice.

4. Who planned the first date among the happy couples? Men (62 percent) claimed to plan the first date. However, the majority of single men felt the first date should be planned together.

5. Who should pay for the date is sometimes the hardest part to figure out. About 80 percent of couples said the man paid for the first date and 20 percent split the check. Among single college women, about 42 percent preferred to split the bill.

6. Money is always a struggle for college students; luckily, 73 percent of couples said their first date cost less than $50, so it is possible to have fun on a budget.

7. Only 29 percent of couples kissed on their first date while 49 percent of college students say they typically kiss on a first date.

8. Communication is extremely important in relationships. Among the couples, 56 percent said they talked or texted each other right after their date. However, less than half of the single college students said they communicate immediately after a first date.

9. When should people plan the second date? According to 77 percent of couples, either during the first date or the day after.

“We were so inspired to hear about what worked from our success stories,” said Dawoon Kang, co-founder of Coffee Meets Bagel. “We felt a responsibility to share this valuable information and help take some of the guesswork and anxiety out of first dates for singles looking to find love.”

Coffee Meets Bagel, using survey data that said 84 percent of singles said they check online review sites like Yelp to help them select a great first date location, launched a website called First Date Spots to help singles find the best place for their date. Singles specify their date spot preference (bar, coffee shop, price, etc.) and the site uses Yelp’s database for the best matches and returns venues with classy, romantic or trendy ambience and quiet or average noise level.

Looking for a meaningful relationship? Coffee Meets Bagel is a highly curated dating service allowing women to choose who gets to talk to them among quality men expressing interest. Launched in 2012, this app has generated more than a billion introductions among singles and more than 50,000 happy couples have met through the app. Download the app for free for iOS and Android.
